Dhonggar Palri Six Pāramitā Foundation

In the sacred continuum of the Buddha’s teachings, certain places hold a timeless resonance—lands where the Dharma once flourished continue to carry its blessings deep within the soil. One such place is Muaro Jambi, in Jambi City, Sumatra, where His Holiness Tulku Karma Trinley Thubten Chöje Gyaltsen Rinpoche established a branch of Dhonggar Palri Monastery known as the Dhonggar Palri Six Pāramitā Foundation.

This region, once part of the ancient Śrīvijaya kingdom, was among the great centers of Buddhist learning in the world. It is said that from these very shores, the revered master Śrī Siṅgha Serliṅpa (Dharmakīrti of Suvarṇadvīpa) transmitted the profound teachings of bodhicitta—the mind of awakening—to the great scholar Atiśa Dīpaṅkara Śrījñāna, who later carried these teachings to Tibet. The compassionate wisdom that Serliṅpa embodied, and the transformative lineage that Atiśa preserved, became the very heart of Mahāyāna and Vajrayāna practice for centuries to come.

To establish a Dhonggar Palri branch upon such sacred ground is therefore deeply auspicious. The land of Jambi bears the subtle imprint of Dharma activity stretching back over a thousand years. In 1970, archaeologists discovered an extraordinary site in Muaro Jambi, spanning close to 2,000 hectares and containing numerous temple complexes and ancient stupas. Scholars have noted that the arrangement of these sacred structures mirrors the architectural layout of Nālandā University—the world’s first Buddhist university and the very seat of learning where Atiśa once studied before journeying to Suvarṇadvīpa (Sumatra) to meet Serliṅpa. This striking resemblance suggests that Jambi, too, was once a vital node in the same network of enlightened scholarship, where wisdom and awakening were cultivated and shared across lands.

Founded in 2024, the Dhonggar Palri Six Pāramitā Foundation has since become a growing hub of Dharma activity in Jambi. The Six Pāramitās—generosity, discipline, patience, diligence, meditation, and wisdom—reflect the heart of this branch’s purpose: to embody the essence of bodhisattva practice and to manifest these perfections through study, contemplation, and compassionate service for the benefit of all beings.

Even without a permanent temple, Gyaltsen Rinpoche has never been deterred from conducting teachings, pujas, and community alms offerings. Under the banner of the foundation, these activities continue to take place at various local sites, sustained by the devotion and support from followers. This steadfast activity stands as a reminder that the true seat of the Dharma lies not in stone or structure, but in the living faith and dedication of practitioners.

In 2025, through Rinpoche’s tireless efforts and the generosity of a devoted follower, a 1.4-hectare plot of land was successfully acquired in Muaro Jambi. On this sacred site, Rinpoche envisions the construction of a monastery reflecting the mother monastery in Nangqên—a tangible spiritual home where Dharma study, meditation, and service may continue to flourish for generations to come.

More than a mere expansion, the Jambi branch represents Gyaltsen Rinpoche’s boundless aspiration to make the Dharma accessible to all, allowing the Buddha’s teachings to reach and awaken beings everywhere. The establishment of the Dhonggar Palri Six Pāramitā Foundation, and the future monastery that will arise in Jambi, embody Gyaltsen Rinpoche’s wish to plant the seeds of wisdom and compassion anew, so that the blessings of the Buddha may continue to guide beings toward peace, awakening, and ultimate liberation.
